If last sem we had an activity called Talking with Families where we had to interview mothers to get a better insight of what they think about healthcare, this sem we get to interview Older people (age>65) under Health Needs of Older People (HNOP).
We used to call our interviewee our 'mother'. Now it's gonna be our 'old person'. How weird.
My old person (of whom i shall not say and shall not leak medical information) is fantastic. I wanna blog so badly about her because she;s just so fantastic but i've to leave out a lot of stuff from here to abide to patient confidentiality.
She is.... argh, old. since i can't tell u the age. Her husband has passed away. She has her medical problems, like almost every other old person.
But she seemed a lot happier than a lot of people. Despite being house-bound.
She was so contented and so worry-free. Despite the amount of pills she had to take daily, or the cane she needed, or the empty house, or the fact that she had to refrain from quite a lot of food... She was in full surrender. She kept mentioning, "I'm doing okay, despite bla bla bla bla bla....but i think i'm okay."
Her face beaming with joy and optimism. I could imagine myself whining to the slightest thing like snow that wet my jeans while this lady is just so amazing. Her every step reminds her of pain. Yet she was more happy than probably the majority of the people in the world?
Her secret? Her faith in Christ. Now, how inspiring is that?
The Bible says 'don't worry about tomorrow'. I know it does but sometimes i get the itch to worry. It seemed so natural to her not to worry AT ALL. She kept saying 'i take it one day at a time'.
'So what if i get dementia tomorrow?" Most people would say that they'd be afraid to lose their sanity and their memory, at least a little bit. She surrendered, TOTALLY to God. And her reward was joy and peace. You could see it from her eyes, and that glow on her wrinkly skin.
The doctors gave her quite a bad prognosis quite a long time ago. She survived. And i think her faith pulled her through.
Quite an amazing 'old person' i have indeed. Somehow, this kind of projects always seem to inspire me more than teach me stuff. And i love it that way.
On another note, I managed to create sparks of my clothes last night.
I was sleeping with my jumper on, and it got hot. So, i decided to take my jumper off. Didn't bother to switch on the lights. As a person full of 'static electricity', i saw sparks between my jumper and my shirt as i took it off. Loud, bright sparks. Ok, not as bright as those from the lighters in a Chem lab. But bright enough to be visible. Brighter than a firefly, at least. Good thing my shirt was still clinging on me. Can imagine those sparks being so painful if it ever 'touch' me.
