My first election experience.

elections elections elections...
i'm sick of it.
No, not the malaysian one. The edinburgh university student association (eusa) one.
Thank God it's ending tomorrow.

The way they campaign here is quite mad. Everything from lots of flyers (i really ain't gonna vote ppl who say we want a greener uni and shoves down so many flyers under my door) to facebook groups and youtube videos. They are seriously serious about this.

Meredith: Seriously?
Izzie: Seriously...
Seriously? Seriously....

ok that was a tad random, but that infamous line from grey's anatomy just keep repeating in my head the moment i use the word seriously.
But seriously! these students are going all out for it, i'm not sure for what, but they are.

I might sound like a democracy freak previously. I love my democracy. I love the idea of people being the boss. I love the way Raja Petra says "rakyat ialah yang berhormat, MPs are the yang berkhidmat. Not the other way round."
But this sudden outburst in my uni might be a tad overboard, but still way better than tyranny.
I get stalked by people on the way to school, see their posters everywhere, have announcements about elections during lectures, get more flyers on the way back and get shouted everything from "go gabe" to  "vote ramsay" everytime i enter the dining hall. And that's bad when i have to pass through that area 4 times daily.

Nevertheless i voted. Not an informed vote i would say, and though i like some of their manifestoes, i know next to nil about all the candidates, except for their names, manifesto and pictures.

And voting here is easy coz it's online! no queues, no standing in the cold weather. just the comfort of my own room.

But back in malaysia, things are getting heated up. And for that, i'm pretty happy.
I think the rakyat should know more about who they are voting for. And most of all, they should know what they are voting for.
So what if that somebody is ur friend? or ur family? or some businessman who gave a huge donation to ur community? Or someone who helped u before? That is in no way the role of an MP!
Sometimes i wonder whether people understand what MPs are supposed to do. They are not charity supporters. They are not local councillors or mayors. They are not a personal helpline. They are not meant to be that because there are people paid to do that kinda stuff! They can help, but that is not their main duty. They can be nice but i rather a strong person who can voice up stuff than just another Mr Nice Guy in parliament.

Their title-to-be is after all member of PARLIAMENT! The heart of democracy. To be our mouthpiece. To voice direction into the making of legislation. To bring out important issues to mend this nation.

Oh, come on. This nation has nothing to improve on? We are on the right track? That's what the BN rollover advert says on top of my hotmail page, with the video that says we are already living in peace and harmony.

Yeah, if you are comparing to Myanmar again like mr ZAM that is...

That's what i don't really fancy about BN. No doubt some of their MPs are mr and ms nice people...but when you get too full of yourself, it's hard to strive for improvement.

the second thing i don't fancy about them is how they literally FORCE MPs under their flag to compromise to whatever their boss in BN says rather than their real bosses who have the real right to sack them. I don't blame these MPs though. I blame the whip system. In my opinion, BN would work so much better without it. At least, without it, they can win 92% of parliament seats and still have people to oppose and debate some motions in parliament. After all, what is the parliament for if not for debates?

The third thing is how they bluntly reject having debates with opposition candidates. I don't understand why not. We wanna have comparison, why are you so afraid to have a proper debate? Are you not capable of debating?

But there are things about the opposition that i don't fancy too.
Like how DAP and PKR are still separate parties. Yes, PKR are mainly anwar's fans and i doubt limkitsiang would give in to anwar for the numero uno role of the party if they merge and vice versa. But if you can't show such little tolerance, you can't make that much of a difference. What i wanna see, personally is a multi-racial party, not a multi-racial coalition. Don't let me choose between two coalitions again. I might have lost faith in coalitions and just power sharing. I do understand how PAS is not involved though. They are after all, quite different.

The idea of fielding Gwo-Burne (the lingam tape recorder) just bemuses me. No background, no track record, no intention, no passion (i doubt passion can grow overnight) and inability to speak the language of parliament. It was sad to know the recording of the lingam tape wasn't intentional (he was trying to record a vase apparently before realising that it was on video mode). I would support him a 100% if he did it intentionally though. But i liked how he answered questions about his inexperience. " I don't have experience in corruption". That was the bomb!

Oh well, i'm done with my voting. All the best to Malaysia voters. and All the best to Malaysia.
